Self-Care Fails: When Wellness Goes Horribly Wrong

We have all seen the perfect aesthetic. You swipe through social media and see someone meditating in a spotless room, bathed in golden sunlight, sipping a perfectly green smoothie. It looks peaceful, healing, and completely effortless.

Then you try it.

Suddenly, your relaxing bubble bath triggers the smoke detector, your green smoothie tastes like pure lawn clippings, and you pull a muscle trying to find your inner peace. True self-care is not always a picture-perfect moment. Sometimes, it is an absolute train wreck. Here are the most relatable, hilarious self-care fails we have all experienced while trying to live our best lives.

The Sheet Mask Jump Scare

Sheet masks promise glowing, hydrated skin in just twenty minutes.

They do not mention that you will look like a villain from a classic horror movie while wearing one.

The reality is, wearing a sheet mask can be a scary look, terrifying your dog, partner, roommate or even a delivery person. The problem is exacerbated if that sheet mask is white or even a bright colour, although, we still prefer these over a DIY mask, where your ingredient choices (think about the staining qualities of turmeric) can have even worse consequences.

The Bath Bomb Trap

Silky water, soothing aromas, and beautiful colours sound like heaven after a stressful workday.

That right there is your expectation – soaking like royalty in a tub of shimmering purple water.

The reality, however, can sometimes be lingering, like smelling like artificial lavender for three days straight. And then there’s the aftermath – spending an hour scrubbing a stubborn, bright pink glitter ring off the porcelain bath, which completely defeats the purpose of relaxing.

Meditation Mind Racing

Proponents say meditation empties your mind and lowers your stress levels.

The goal is to sit in silence for ten minutes and focus on your breath. But in reality, you’re actually wondering if you turned off the oven, why you said that weird thing to your boss in 2018, and if a penguin and a duck fought, who would win?

Consequently, you emerge more stressed about your internal chaos than before you sat down.

There’s a proper process for shutting down your thought to refocus your mind – and it often takes weeks of practice to perfect it.

DIY Turmeric Face Mask

Yes, it may be all the rage on socials, but sometimes, the results are, shall we say, somewhat misleading.

A DIY turmeric face mask can lead to forty minutes of frantic scrubbing and skin that still glows a wonderous neon yellow colour well after the fact. And this doesn’t even take into account the staining of your bathroom fixtures, the tile grout, the ruined white bath towels, and a smell that can linger for days.

Perhaps spot testing would be a good idea, for both turmeric and similar strong coloured or strong scented ingredients, lest you too want to look radioactive instead of beautified.

The Beetroot Lip Stain Blunder

Much like the turmeric face mask, the potential catastrophe that can be caused by attempting a beetroot lip stain are best left to professionals.

There’s accidentally looking like your aesthetic is a vampire bite, the possibility of a pink moustache that is impossible to wash off, stained teeth that could be deeply concerning, and also the possibility that you’ll look as though you’re bleeding.

Again, let’s rather leave this DIY for the professionals.

The Charcoal Peel-Off Mask Trapping

This is akin to putting industrial-strength glue on your face, and removal can feel like painful exfoliation of your entire soul, if not accidentally removing your eyebrows in the process.

If you must do a peel-off mask, rather use the reputable versions from your nearest beauty store.

The Coconut Oil Shower Ice Rink

There’s the promise of silky-smooth skin, which is usually achieved. However, the perils associated with it are usually not worth the risk.

Using oils in a wet bathroom environment can turn the floors into Teflon – everything that touches them (including you) will simply slide around and could result in a near-death experience.

So unless you like the idea of crawling out of your bathroom on all fours, perhaps better to stick to after-bath lotions instead of slippery oils.

The Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Yes, we know all about those flawless, shiny hair goals. And we’re here for it.

However, at the risk of smelling like a salad dressing, we’re not too sure about this one. Any heat will activate a pungent vinegar cloud, which anyone sitting near you will be able to distinguish.

Perhaps leave your hair glossing treatments for the ladies at your nearest hair salon.

The Sound Machine Distraction

White noise and nature sounds are supposed to lull your overactive brain into a deep, peaceful slumber.

So you choose as soothing “gentle rainforest rain” soundtrack. The problem is, the loop includes a sudden, hyper-realistic thunderclap every four minutes that jolts you awake. Ocean waves on the other hand, just make you need to use the bathroom all night.

The key is to choose your sounds carefully, and make sure you have played them through in full before attempting to use them as part of your bedtime routine – avoiding the pitfalls of sudden tempo changes or unwanted audio that breaks your lull into slumberland.

The Moral of the Story

True self-care is not about succeeding at a trendy routine. It is about giving yourself grace when things do not go to plan. If your yoga video makes you dizzy, or your scented candle gives you a headache, laugh it off. The best thing you can do for your mental health is to stop taking wellness so seriously.
