What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
ASD, or commonly just referred to as autism, is a developmental disorder. Autism can affect communication, behaviour, and social functioning. Due to the fact that symptoms are commonly recognised during the early years of a child’s life, most autism diagnoses are made on children, but individuals can be diagnosed at any age.
There are a lot of potential symptoms of ASD. Some of the more common signs include:
This list is by no means exhaustive or conclusive. We strongly recommend seeing your General Practitioner if you think your child may have ASD.
Individuals diagnosed with ASD can experience a wide range of symptoms with differing levels of severity. No diagnosis of ASD or experience is exactly the same.
Autism can be treated in a number of ways. Medication can be used to treat certain symptoms, such as aggressive behaviour, hyperactivity, anxiety, or attention issues.
Additionally, therapy—including psychology, occupational therapy, speech, and behaviour therapy—is used to help both clients diagnosed with ASD and their families.
One Central Health provides comprehensive autism assessment and therapy services across a range of allied health disciplines.
The DSM-5 is the method with which mental disorders are diagnosed. Developed and regulated by the American Psychiatric Association in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, (hence the name DSM-5) this method ensures consistent and reliable diagnoses, and is the standard by which all mental disorder assessments are measured.
